Getting a ‘haircut’ in the Dominican Republic
Wandering the streets this evening I came across a most unusual hairdressing establishment. A bevy of attractive ladies were seated around the shop, apparently waiting for customers.
It’s not what you are thinking you sickos!
No, the peculiar feature of this hair salon was the impressive wooden bar taking up half a wall. I didn’t need a haircut, so instead I had a glass of rum. Then I complained there was a hair in my rum and walked out without paying.

A peculiar peluqueria huh! A bevy of attractive maidens - and I thought is was only in China such things existed!
Anyway, I think the conquistador I commented on before might be Columbus’s brother, whose name I think was Bartolome Colon. He was the governer of La Espanola (the dom republic). If you want a great book on the conquistadores, though not really about the DOm Rep, make sure before you head back to NZ you pick up a copy of ‘The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico’ by Bernal Diaz

The peluqueria was totally legit. It just had a bar in it for some bizarre reason.
The statue was of some priest by the way. At least I think it was judging from inscription - ‘frey’ someone or other.
I may have read that ‘Discovery and Conquest of Mexico’ before. Not sure. If it is older I probably have. I did quite a bit of Latin American history etc. at university, then got distracted by other stuff - China etc.
